Once your dragon reaches adulthood (around 12–18 months), its care needs shift. Adults are calmer, need more space, and their diet balances out between greens and protein. This guide explains exactly how to keep your adult dragon healthy and thriving.

✅ Enclosure Setup (Adults)

Minimum size: 120 cm x 60 cm x 60 cm (4 ft x 2 ft x 2 ft).

Bigger is better if space allows, but avoid excessively oversized tanks that make heating difficult.

Substrate options: tiles, sealed wood, reptile carpet, or bioactive (with safe, compacted soil mix).

Provide multiple hides, climbing branches, and basking platforms.

☀️ Heating & Lighting

Basking spot: 38–42°C (100–107°F).

Cool side: 26–30°C (78–86°F).

Nighttime: not below 18°C (64°F).

UVB: T5 tube, 10–12% strength, covering at least 70% of the enclosure.

Replace bulbs every 12 months.

🥗 Feeding Schedule (12 Months +)

Adults need 80% greens / 20% insects.

Feed insects 3–4 times per week, not daily.

Insects: crickets, woodies, silkworms, hornworms, black soldier fly larvae.

Avoid fatty insects (mealworms, superworms) except as occasional treats.

Dust insects with calcium 3x per week and multivitamin 1x per week.

Fresh greens daily: collard, rocket, bok choy, mustard greens, pumpkin, zucchini, squash, occasional fruit.

💧 Hydration

Adults often drink less visibly than babies.

Offer a shallow water dish and refresh daily.

Light misting occasionally, but not heavily (adults prefer to drink, not absorb).

Gut-load insects to keep hydration levels high.

🦎 Behaviour & Enrichment

Adults are calmer and easier to handle than babies.

Provide out-of-enclosure time for exercise.

Climbing branches, basking rocks, and enrichment help prevent boredom.

Watch for mating behaviour in males — head bobbing, black beards, dominance posturing.

⚠️ Common Adult Issues

Obesity: overfeeding protein is a common issue. Keep diet greens-heavy.

Metabolic Bone Disease (MBD): prevent with proper UVB + calcium.

Brumation: many adults slow down in winter — eating less, hiding more. This is normal (see our Brumation Guide).

Egg-binding (females): ensure proper calcium and laying area if gravid.

Final Word

Adult bearded dragons are hardy, calm, and rewarding companions. By giving them the right balance of diet, heat, and UVB, you’ll ensure they stay strong and live a full, healthy life.
