Diet is the foundation of a healthy bearded dragon. What you feed, how often, and how you supplement makes all the difference to their growth, colour, and lifespan. This guide covers babies, juveniles, and adults so you know exactly what to do.

✅ Baby Dragons (0–5 months)

Diet split: 80% protein / 20% greens.

Feed 3–5 times daily — only small insects.

Insects: pinhead crickets, small woodies (speckled feeder roaches), silkworms, BSFL (black soldier fly larvae).

Dust insects with calcium every feed, multivitamin 2x weekly.

Greens daily: collard, mustard, rocket, bok choy.

✅ Juveniles (6–12 months)

Diet split: 50% protein / 50% greens.

Feed insects 2–3 times daily.

Suitable insects: medium crickets, woodies, silkworms, BSFL, hornworms (if available).

Calcium: 5x per week.

Multivitamin: 1–2x weekly.

Offer wide variety of veg: pumpkin, zucchini, squash, endive, turnip greens.

✅ Adults (12 months +)

Diet split: 80% greens / 20% protein.

Feed insects 3–4 times weekly.

Insects: large crickets, adult woodies, silkworms, BSFL, occasional superworms/mealworms as treats.

Calcium: 3x per week.

Multivitamin: 1x per week.

Limit fruit — small amounts only (berries, mango, papaya).

🥦 Greens & Veggies

Best staples: collard, rocket, mustard, endive, bok choy, pumpkin, zucchini, squash.

Avoid spinach, lettuce, and avocado (unsafe).

🐛 Insects (Australia Only)

✅ Safe & legal: crickets, woodies (speckled feeder roaches), silkworms, BSFL, mealworms, superworms, hornworms (if available).

❌ Not available in Australia: Dubia roaches (illegal to keep/sell in most states).

Always gut-load insects 24 hrs before feeding.

Never feed wild-caught insects (pesticide risk).

Waxworms/mealworms = fatty treats only.

💊 Supplementation

Calcium: dust all live food.

Multivitamins: fill nutritional gaps.

Must be phosphorus-free.

Correct balance of UVB + calcium prevents MBD (metabolic bone disease).

💧 Hydration

Provide shallow water dish daily.

Babies: light misting or water by dropper.

Fresh greens + insects are key hydration sources.

⚠️ Feeding Mistakes to Avoid

Overfeeding protein in adults → obesity.

Feeding insects too large for babies → impaction risk.

Skipping supplements → bone weakness and deformities.

Too much fruit → diarrhoea and obesity.

Final Word

Feeding right is the most powerful tool you have as a keeper. Get the balance correct and you’ll have a strong, colourful dragon with excellent longevity.
